Consumer Diamond Education - Diamond Carat Weight

When you have decided on what diamond cut, color, and clarity grade you are looking in choosing to buy a diamond, it is easy to determine the diamond carat weight that will fit your taste and fit within your budget.

Below, this figure illustrates how diamonds of different carat weights look when set in a ring.  Please note that a 2 carats diamond does not appear to be twice the size of a 1 carat diamond when viewed from the top.

When diamond are mined, large gems are discovered much less frequently than small ones, which makes large diamonds much more valuable. In fact, diamond prices rise exponentially with carat weight.  So, a 2 carats diamond of a given diamond quality is always worth more than two 1 carat diamonds of the same identical quality.

What is The Best Diamond Carat Weight Size for me?

To choose the best diamond carat weight, you should consider her, the size of her hand and finger, the size of the ring or jewelry item setting, and finally the most important your budget.

  1. If you have a set budget, then explore all your options and you find that there is a wide range of diamond carat weights and diamond qualities available to satisfy your taste and targeted budget.
  2. If you are, or the love one you are looking to buy the diamond for is, very active or not used to wearing jewelry, she may find herself bumping or nicking her new diamond ring. Then, you may consider a smaller size diamond carat weight or a setting that protects a larger diamond from getting knocked against doors, counters, or any object.
  3. Keep in mind, the smaller finger size is, the larger the diamond will appear.  A 1-1/2 Carats diamond solitaire looks much larger on a finger size 3 than a finger size 9.
  4. If you have chosen a ring (or any jewelry item) setting, be sure that the diamond you choose to buy will fit your jewelry setting. Look for diamond size (dimension) specifications of the ring setting.  Make sure to ask The Jewelry Hut Expert jewelers for maximum or minimum diamond size that can be fit on your ring.
  5. If it is important to you to have a large diamond carat weight, yet you have to work within your your set budget, then consider a good cut, SI1 clarity, H or I color grad diamond.

The best way to determine what size diamond is best for her, it is best to get an idea of what she is expecting.  If you plan carefully, you can get the answers to your questions without raising her suspicions.
